Dark Electronic Melodies, Driving Rhythms & Humanist Lyrics Since 1995

Angels & Agony early lineup

The Beginning

Angels & Agony was founded in the Netherlands in autumn 1995 by Reinier Kahle. The project began with a series of dark electronic compositions, which Kahle developed into songs after inviting a friend to sing his lyrics. Guitarist Erik Wierenga soon joined, adding a rougher edge to the band's live sound.

The band's name was taken from a graphic novel with short stories that Kahle was working on at the time. The contrast between angels and agony reflected the duality of human experience, a theme that would remain central to the band's music.

DJ Marco van Belle joined the group initially as manager and later became a live keyboard player and backing vocalist. In 1998, the original singer left the band. Following encouragement from Erik and Marco, Kahle took over lead vocals, marking an important turning point in the band's development.

Three demos were released during the early years and received positive reviews from magazines covering the electronic music scene. In 1999, Angels & Agony released the Unity EP on Aragon Records, produced by Axel Ermes of Girls Under Glass. The release included the club hit "One" and established the band internationally within the dark electronic scene.

The Evolution

The release of Unity opened the door to a new phase in the band's career. In 2001, Angels & Agony signed with the German label Out of Line and released the single Darkness, followed by their debut full-length album Eternity. Both releases were produced by Ronan Harris of VNV Nation.

The band continued to develop its distinctive blend of dark electronic atmospheres, melodic synth lines, driving rhythms, and expressive vocals. Forever (2002) and Salvation (2003) expanded their discography, while the 2004 album Avatar brought the band to a wider North American club audience through Metropolis Records.

In 2006, Angels & Agony released Forward, a single that preceded the album Unison in 2007. Mixed by renowned producer John Fryer, Unison further refined the band's melodic and dance-oriented sound. The music combined powerful electronic rhythms with philosophical and humanist lyrics, exploring questions of existence, life, and death while retaining a positive message.

After a period of almost eight years away from releasing a new album, Angels & Agony returned in 2015 with Monument. The album was again mixed by John Fryer and brought together the band's characteristic melodic songwriting, powerful beats, and expansive electronic arrangements. It marked a new chapter in the band's history and demonstrated the enduring strength of their musical identity.

From its beginnings in 1995 to the release of Monument, Angels & Agony has remained committed to creating music that balances darkness with hope, introspection with movement, and emotional depth with the energy of the dancefloor.
